Summer in Brevard

We have white squirrels in Brevard. We have grey squirrels too, but they don't seem to get as much attention as the white ones. I guess it is unusual and it makes me laugh a little every time I hear a squeal of excitement and see someone 'that's not from around here' fumble around in their purse or pack for their camera in hopes of catching a shot of one scampering around town. Everywhere has to be famous for something I guess; we have white squirrels and great MUSIC.
I was just on the site for the Heart of Brevard http://www.brevardnc.org/ and read about the 5th Annual White Squirrel Festival that is coming up Memorial Day Weekend, May 24/25, 2008. This is really a great event and one you shouldn't miss if you happen to be in the area over Memorial Day. During the festival there is a hilarious Squirrel Box Derby that gives kids and adults alike a chance to design, build, and race non-motorized vehicles down Jailhouse Hill; and 18 FREE concerts going on throughout the weekend. This year Edwin McCain will be the headline musician and the last person playing on Sunday night. Go to the site and check out the other bands and happenings of the weekend. It is a fantastic time to see what Brevard has to offer, really get a feel for the community, have some fun, and enjoy some great music.
If music is your thing, you shouldn't pass up the opportunity to come to Brevard during the summer. The world renowned Brevard Music Center is proud to announce that on June 27th BMC Artistic Advisor and Principal Conductor, Keith Lockhart will be inaugurated and lead the Brevard Music Center Orchestra with cellist Yo-Yo Ma in this season's opening night. Amazing. You can find the rest of BMC's summer concert schedule and learn more about this 'community where creative, committed musicians begin to realize their aspirations' on their website http://www.brevardmusic.org/.
There really is no better time to come to Brevard, NC and these beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. If you would like more information, feel free to get in touch with any of us at Terra Firma Group, located in the center of downtown Brevard and at http://www.terrafirmagroupllc.com/.

Planting Gardens

Spring has sprung as they say. Well, Spring is trying to "sprung" in Brevard. It seems we're into our last more than chilly nights, which ease all of us into the season. It's a nice time of year and I like the nip in the air first thing in the morning. The temperature during the day is reaching comfortably into the mid-60's and giving the flowers, trees, and grass a chance to bloom and grow. We've decided to plant a garden this year and have methodically put the plan down on paper and laid out the ground work with hopes of actually putting the first seeds in the ground in the next couple of weeks.

Our family started this Spring off by celebrating my parents' Golden Anniversary. What a neat way to start the season and remember the past 50 years. For my parents, raising 3 children, moving into new homes and communities to eventually return to the hometown my dad grew up in, 5 grandchildren and all that comes with that wonder, not to mention sisters and brothers, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, great and grand, young, old, and those that are gone - the years have held so many beginnings and endings. In our family it is hard to gather everyone together when all are scattered like seeds in the wind along the East Coast. This celebration was the first time in 10 years my brothers and I, and our families, have all been together with our parents. It is funny how even with years in between we all seem to pick up where we left off and our children seem to do the same with their cousins. So many gardens planted.

For us, Spring brings (more!) soccer, band concerts and piano recitals, and the home stretch of yet another school year. I know my husband and I will soon find ourselves looking back and wondering when "pig-pen" soccer turned into a more skillful game; honking clarinets and piano marches turned into symphonic performances; and all that homework turned into graduations! So many seeds being sown.

This time of year also seems to remind us of why we have chosen Brevard as our home. Although we are not from the area, we have been here for 16 years and after living in various parts of the country and in my husband's case oversees, do consider Brevard our home. It is a nice community that allows our family to bloom and stay in touch with what is important to us. Yes, we toss around the idea of moving occassionally, but always come back to wondering why we would want to make a change. Never being able to come up with any reason to leave, and only very good reasons to stay, here we find ourselves and for that we are thankful.

I think annuals are pretty, but there is something about perennials that sit better with me. Having said that, I have come to realize that change does happen and change is good. For me, after working in real estate for some 14 years I'm happy to say that making a change and coming "back to town" to work for Terra Firma Group is giving me the opportunity to not only continue to live in this really neat community and stay on "solid ground", but to work in it with some pretty great people and help others find their reality of calling Brevard home . . . so many gardens yet to plant.

Milk & Bread!!!

Let it snow, let it snow! Well with the approach of wintery weather.........Do we all have our milk and bread? Somehow that has become the staple of a good winter storm. We can survive without anything else....but milk and bread...that's a must, it will get us through anything!

As it approaches I have thought about going to the grocery store but I have chosen to not to. I don't want to wait in the traffic line trying to turn into the grocery store....little long the line inside the store, plus the fact... there is probably no milk or bread left to be had....then where would I be but irritated. Instead I think I will choose to take my computer home, some paperwork and prepare to spend tomorrow at home working if the weather calls for it! Sometimes those are the most productive and creative days anyway! With our computers and cell phones we can practically work from anywhere and get it all done.........sometimes even more with the peace and quiet of a good winters day!

Wishng everyone the joy of a beautiful snowflake!

HAPPINESS!

Have you ever thought of what is it that really makes us happy??? Is it the Love of Christ, our job, money, friends, family, material things? For most of us it is a combination of things that make us happy. For those of you who are still searching for happiness you might want to look just one county over. It was announced on 20/20 Friday night that the happiest city in the United States of America is ASHEVILLE, NC!!! Amazing Huh! I guess you can get everything in Asheville. :)

Have a Happy Day! :)

CHANGE!

Oh that seems to be the operative word everywhere these days: CHANGE!

Today is day 2 and I think we will all grow and change a little each day....that's life's beauty. Changing doesn't mean going backward.... it is going forward (So I won't wipe out yesterday's posting...ha ha) I will just move forward and build and improve each day

What kind of things do you think needs to change? Is change ever simple? Is it necessary?

Today it is raining, at times it is pouring........but I wouldn't change that at all, that's like liquid gold for our area which has suffered one of the worst droughts in decades. Today is a gift! Our soaked hair, wet clothes and damp papers (which you can never keep dry no matter how hard you try) may give the appearance that it's a damper of a day --- maybe you think, hmmm in the real estate business you must take those days off.... but no, there's still work to do & homes and land are there to buy or sell whether the sun is shining or the rain is pouring down -- everyone is still looking for their spot to call their own or needing to list their home and relocate. Sometimes with the level playing field that today's technologies have moved to you can do it all without much concern about what the weather holds!

Oh look, technology, another thing to be thankful for! :)

Our profession has seen many changes over the years and the real estate market has rode it's ups and downs, though it is and always will be (no matter what the ups and downs are) one of the strongest and greatest markets because one of the strongest & most primary needs of us all is a place to call HOME!
